NATO to Strengthen Ties with Ukraine and Indo-Pacific Partners
NATO will appoint a senior representative in Kyiv to deepen Ukraine’s relationship with the alliance and announce a new military command in Germany for training Ukrainian troops, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said.
New Initiatives and Partnerships
Speaking at the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum, Sullivan announced four new joint projects with Indo-Pacific partners—Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea—focusing on Ukraine, artificial intelligence, disinformation, and cybersecurity. He emphasized the importance of the ties between the United States, Europe, and the Indo-Pacific.
Russia’s Defense Expansion
Sullivan noted that Russia, with help from Iran, China, and North Korea, is attempting its most significant defense expansion since the Cold War. He highlighted that North Korea is providing ballistic missiles to Russia, and China’s trade with Russia is enabling its war efforts.
Support for Ukraine
During the ongoing NATO Summit, the alliance will announce a new military command in Wiesbaden, Germany, to train and equip Ukrainian troops. NATO will also strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and provide F-16s. Allies have pledged to provide Ukraine with at least 40 billion euros worth of security assistance next year.
Commitment to Unity
Sullivan underscored NATO’s commitment to stand with Ukraine against Russian aggression, sending a message to Russian President Putin that he cannot divide or weaken the alliance, and that Ukraine will prevail.
