National Commission for Women Demands Action on Attack in West Bengal

The National Commission for Women has taken note of an alleged attack on a BJP woman worker in West Bengal. The Commission has demanded a detailed action report within three days.

Incident Details

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that Rosonara Khatun, a Muslim woman and member of the BJP’s Minority Morcha, was stripped and beaten in Coochbehar for supporting the party. The incident occurred at Ramthenga Market in the Mathabhanga Assembly of Coochbehar district.

BJP leader Amit Malviya claimed that Khatun was dragged by her hair and severely assaulted. She had been in a state of panic since the election results and is currently hospitalized.

Reactions and Actions

Expressing concern over women’s safety in West Bengal, Malviya stated, “There is a #Sandeshkhali in every village of Bengal.” The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice.

The National Commission for Women condemned the incident and directed the police to invoke relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code in the FIR. They also demanded the prompt arrest of the accused and free medical treatment for the victim. A fair, time-bound investigation is required, with a detailed action report to be submitted within three days.

Background

This concern over women’s safety follows the recent Sandeshkhali violence, where villagers accused TMC strongman Shahjahan and his aides of land-grab and sexual assault. Shahjahan was later arrested. Both BJP and Trinamool Congress have been accusing each other over the Sandeshkhali incident.
