New Delhi, India, September 30: Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes that England should reinstate their experienced players in the One Day International (ODI) team ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan next year.

England’s current captain, Jos Buttler, missed the recent white-ball series against Australia. Joe Root, who played during England’s Test summer, was rested, and Test captain Ben Stokes has hinted at a return to the 50-over format.

In their absence, a young England squad played against Australia. The T20I series ended 1-1, and the five-match ODI series saw England come back from 2-0 down to 2-2. However, Australia won the final match and the series by 49 runs using the DLS method.

Despite the young players’ impressive performances, Hussain feels that experienced players like Buttler, Stokes, and Root should have designated spots in the team. He emphasized that these players are crucial for England’s success in the Champions Trophy.

Hussain expressed concerns about Stokes’ workload, given his role as a Test captain and all-rounder. He also highlighted Root’s importance, especially on spin-friendly pitches in Pakistan.

England will first play a three-match Test series in Pakistan, starting on October 7 in Multan, before finalizing their squad for the Champions Trophy.
