The Indian Himalayan Council of Nalanda Buddhist Tradition (IHCNBT) held a national conference titled “Nalanda Buddhism in the 21st Century” at the Serajey Monastery in Bylakuppe, Karnataka. Esteemed Buddhist scholars and practitioners from across India gathered to discuss the relevance of Nalanda Buddhism in today’s world.

Opening Remarks

Maling Gombu, General Secretary of IHCNBT, highlighted the importance of the Sera Jey Monastery as a key center for Buddhism in the Tibetan settlement of Bylakuppe. He emphasized the role of Buddhist teachings in promoting peace and compassion amid global conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war and Israel-Gaza tensions.

Keynote Address

His Eminence Khen Rinpoche of Serajey Monastery inaugurated the conference, discussing the enduring significance of Nalanda Buddhism. He praised the efforts of IHCNBT in preserving these teachings, which offer guidance during crises.

Modernization and Education

Guest of Honor Tulku Choddar from Namdroling Monastery spoke about modernizing Buddhist teachings through collaborations with the NIOS education board. This initiative aims to protect Buddha’s teachings as essential humanistic principles.

Conference Highlights

The event brought together 320 delegates, including revered Rinpoches, Geshes, Khenpos, and scholars, to discuss topics like the history of Nalanda Buddhism and its modern interpretations. The conference stressed the need for Buddhist teachings to adapt to contemporary society.

Future Initiatives

IHCNBT plans to organize similar conferences across the Indian Himalayan states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Ladakh, to preserve and promote Nalanda Buddhism’s rich heritage.
