Nagaland Observes Remembrance Day at Kohima War Cemetery
On November 11, Nagaland joined the global community in observing Remembrance Day at the Kohima War Cemetery. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio emphasized the importance of honoring those who sacrificed their lives for peace, justice, and freedom. He praised the people of Nagaland for preserving the history of the battle and highlighted the cemetery as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the battle.
The Kohima War Cemetery is the resting place for 1,420 Allied soldiers and the cremation site for 917 Hindu and Sikh soldiers. Rio noted that the Naga people have transformed their experiences of violence into a message of global peace. He quoted the Kohima Epitaph, “When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today,” urging everyone to remember and respect those who served.
Dr. Andrew Fleming, the British Deputy High Commissioner, praised the Commonwealth War Graves Association and the Nagaland government for maintaining the cemetery. He mentioned the Battle of Kohima’s significance and its recognition as Britain’s greatest battle in 2013. Dr. Fleming also expressed his commitment to ongoing collaboration with Nagaland and announced the Welsh Government’s partnership for the Hornbill Festival.
The event included a two-minute silence for fallen soldiers and a vintage car rally, flagged off by Dr. Fleming and CM Rio, attended by various dignitaries and veterans.
