N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan Appointed as Supreme Court Judges

The Central Government has announced the appointment of N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan as judges of the Supreme Court of India. This decision was made by the President after consulting with the Chief Justice of India.

Justice N Kotiswar Singh

Justice N Kotiswar Singh, previously the Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, is the first judge from Manipur to be appointed to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Collegium praised his judicial performance, administrative skills, integrity, and merit.

Justice R Mahadevan

Justice R Mahadevan, the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, was also appointed. The Collegium noted his judicial work and seniority, emphasizing that his appointment would bring diversity to the Bench as he belongs to a backward community from Tamil Nadu.

The appointments fill the vacancies left by the retirements of Justices Aniruddha Bose and AS Bopanna, bringing the Supreme Court to its full strength of 34 judges.
