On October 11, 2024, the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express derailed after colliding with a stationary goods train in Kavaraipettai, Chennai. Southern Railway’s Senior Public Relations Officer, D Om Prakash, confirmed that all passengers were rescued. Some were transported to Chennai Central to board a special train to Darbhanga, while others received medical attention. Three passengers with serious injuries were treated at Stanley Medical College Hospital, and four with minor injuries were treated at Government Hospital Ponneri, receiving Ex-Gratia payments.

Efforts to restore the track are ongoing and expected to conclude soon. Stranded passengers were taken to Ponneri and Chennai Central by buses and special trains. At Chennai Central, they underwent medical checkups, received food and water, and boarded a special train to Darbhanga, departing at 4:45 AM.

A high-level inquiry into the accident has been initiated. The incident has caused rescheduling and rerouting of several trains, including the Dr MGR Chennai Central – Visakhapatnam Express, which will depart 2 hours and 30 minutes later than scheduled and will skip the Sulurupetta stop.
