MV Govindan Responds to Amit Shah’s Comments on Kerala Landslides

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), August 2: MV Govindan, the state secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), has criticized Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent comments regarding the Kerala government’s response to the Wayanad landslides. Shah suggested that the losses could have been minimized if the state had been more alert.

Govindan’s Response

Addressing a press conference, Govindan stated, “Amit Shah’s statement was politically motivated. Such reactions will not help anyone at a time when we need to work together. The culture of Kerala is to stand united on common issues of the country.” He explained that the central government had issued an orange alert, but the rainfall was much heavier than predicted, and a red alert was declared only after the disaster occurred.

Amit Shah’s Statement

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the Kerala government could have minimized the losses in Wayanad if they had become alert after the Central government’s warning about potential landslides. He emphasized that the Narendra Modi government would stand with the people of Kerala, regardless of party politics.

Tejasvi Surya’s Remarks

Govindan also responded to BJP MP Tejasvi Surya’s comments calling the disaster “man-made,” accusing the RSS of spreading lies for political gain.

Contributions to CMDRF

Govindan highlighted contributions to the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF), including Rs 10 lakh each from party units in Tripura and Tamil Nadu, and Rs 25 lakh from the CPI(M) Kerala unit. He assured that the CMDRF is subject to CAG audit.

Current Situation

Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed 308 deaths from the landslides in Wayanad. Rescue and relief operations continue in Chooralmala and Mundakkai. The Indian Army has handed over a 190-feet Bailey Bridge to the civil administration, connecting regions isolated by the landslides.
