Muthalapozhi Fishing Harbour Gets Rs 177 Crore Boost from Indian Government

Muthalapozhi Fishing Harbour Development Plan Approved

The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying has sanctioned a Rs 177 crore project for the Muthalapozhi Fishing Harbour in Kerala. The funding, split 60:40 between the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and Kerala’s contribution, aims to enhance the harbour’s capacity and facilities.

Project Details

The expansion will accommodate 415 mechanized fishing boats, enabling an annual fish landing of 38,142 metric tonnes. This initiative is set to benefit around 10,000 people directly and indirectly through job creation and economic growth.

Infrastructure Upgrades

The project includes civil, mechanical, and electrical works, such as wharf expansion, road improvements, and new facilities like an auction hall and worker rest areas. Modern amenities will include electrical systems, navigation lights, and security systems.

Environmental and Scientific Considerations

Rs 13 crore is allocated for a ‘smart green’ harbour and coastal protection. Scientific studies by the Central Water and Power Research Station and an Environmental Impact Assessment ensure sustainable development.

Impact on Fisheries Sector

This project is part of a larger investment by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, which has allocated Rs 38,572 crore to fisheries development over the past decade, boosting infrastructure and employment in the sector.
