Mumbai’s Local Trains Resume After Heavy Rains Cause Delays and Waterlogging
Mumbai, Maharashtra [India], September 26: After heavy rains caused severe waterlogging, local train services on Mumbai’s Harbour line have resumed. The Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) stated that trains are running cautiously at a restricted speed of 25 kmph. Services resumed at 11:23 pm after water receded between Govandi and Mankhurd.
Earlier, Central Railways advised commuters to stay inside the trains for safety. Despite the heavy rainfall, Western Railway’s Mumbai Suburban network continued to operate normally.
The torrential rains also led to a landslide at the Mumbra by-pass road. Fire Officer Swapnil Sarnobat reported that rocks were removed from the road after the incident. Heavy traffic was seen on the Eastern Express Highway and other parts of the city, including Kurla East, Nehru Nagar, and Chembur.
SpiceJet announced that flight operations might be affected due to the bad weather. Seven go-arounds and two flight diversions were reported at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, leading to a holiday declaration for all schools and colleges on September 26. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary. Pune also declared a public holiday for schools and colleges due to the forecasted heavy rainfall.
IMD also issued alerts for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in various regions across India.
