Mumbai Police Tighten Security for MVA Protest March After Shivaji Statue Collapse
The Mumbai police have increased security in response to the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s (MVA) call for a protest march. The march will take place from Hutatma Chowk to the Gateway of India on Sunday.
A 35-foot-tall statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Sindhudurg district collapsed on August 26. The statue had been unveiled on December 4 last year during Navy Day celebrations.
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray criticized the BJP-led Mahayuti government over the statue’s collapse. He questioned the explanation that strong winds caused the fall.
Youth Congress leaders and other party workers were detained by Mumbai police while protesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city. They demanded a public apology from him over the statue’s collapse.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologized to the people of Maharashtra, saying, “Those who consider Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as their deity and have been deeply hurt, I bow my head and apologize to them. Our values are different. For us, nothing is bigger than our deity.”
Chetan Patil, the structural consultant of the statue, was arrested from Kolhapur. An FIR was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that the state government is taking swift action for the reconstruction of the statue. Two committees have been formed, including one to investigate the collapse.
A joint technical committee headed by the Indian Navy, with representatives from the Maharashtra Government and technical experts, is being formed to investigate the damage to the statue.
