Mumbai Indians Release Issy Wong Ahead of WPL Season Three
The Mumbai Indians, champions of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL), have announced their player retention list for the upcoming season three auctions. Former Indian cricketer Reema Malhotra commented on the decision not to retain England pacer Issy Wong, citing her inconsistent performances last season as a reason. Wong, who played two matches and took three wickets, was released along with Indian players Humaira Kazi, Fatima Jaffer, and Priyanka Bala.
Despite Wong’s historic achievement of the first-ever WPL hat-trick for MI, the team has chosen to maintain a strong core, including captain Harmanpreet Kaur, West Indies’ Hayley Matthews, England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt, and New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr. Malhotra noted that MI’s core remains intact, and the team may look to strengthen their squad by targeting a wicketkeeper and an overseas player in the mini-auction.
The retained players list also features Amandeep Kaur, Amanjot Kaur, South Africa’s Chloe Tryon, Jintimani Kalita, Keerthana B, Pooja Vastrakar, Saika Ishaque, Sajana Sajeevan, South African pace veteran Shabnim Ismail, and Indian wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia. After winning the first WPL title in 2023, MI were eliminated by Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2024 eliminator. The auction dates for the upcoming season are yet to be announced.
