Mumbai and Pune Take Action Against Zika Virus Spread
The Union Health Ministry has urged states to maintain vigilance by screening pregnant women for Zika virus infection and monitoring the growth of foetuses in those who test positive. Health facilities have assigned nodal officers to ensure premises are Aedes mosquito-free. States are also instructed to strengthen entomological surveillance and intensify vector control activities in various areas.
In Pune, two new Zika virus cases were reported, bringing the total to six. Both new cases involve pregnant women in Erandwane. The first case was reported by a doctor and his teenage daughter from the same area. Health officials have conducted inspections and collected samples, with 25 samples taken, including 12 from Erandwane. Out of these, two tested positive. Additional samples from Mundhwa showed no positive results.
Pregnant women infected with Zika are at higher risk, so health officials are conducting anomaly scans and increasing surveillance in affected areas. The Pune Municipal Corporation is urging citizens to follow guidelines and take precautions to prevent the virus’s spread. Police are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to control the outbreak.
