Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Discusses Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament
New Delhi, August 8: Former Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has expressed strong support for the Waqf Amendment Bill, describing it as a move towards ‘constitutional hierarchy over unconstitutional anarchy.’ Naqvi, a senior BJP leader, believes the bill is a constructive step to resolve long-standing issues within the Waqf system.
Naqvi emphasized that the bill is essential for the country, religion, and the Waqf system. He criticized those spreading fear and misinformation, urging them to stop their ‘communal fanatic conspiracy.’ According to Naqvi, the Waqf system needs to move beyond its ‘touch-me-not’ mentality to ensure transparency and accountability.
The Waqf Amendment Bill, introduced in Lok Sabha by Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, aims to address issues related to the powers of State Waqf Boards, registration and survey of waqf properties, and removal of encroachments. Opposition parties, including Congress, DMK, NCP, Trinamool Congress, and AIMIM, opposed the bill, arguing that it goes against federalism and constitutional provisions.
Rijiju responded to the opposition’s concerns by agreeing to further scrutiny of the bill by a Joint Parliamentary Committee. He assured that the government is open to detailed discussions and is acting on recommendations from a panel formed during the Congress-led UPA government.
