Muharram Processions in Mumbai, Delhi, and Other Cities with Tight Security
On July 17, security was heightened across Mumbai for the Muharram procession. Abhinav Deshmukh, Additional Commissioner of South Region, Mumbai, stated that the police have made extensive arrangements and deployed large numbers of forces to ensure a smooth procession. People were requested to follow police guidelines.
The Mumbai Traffic Police issued a traffic advisory for the procession, affecting areas like Dharavi, Mahim Sion Link Road, and Sant Rohidas Road from 3 PM to midnight.
In Hyderabad, Telangana, a large number of people participated in the Muharram procession. Similarly, in Delhi, security measures were intensified. Achin Garg, Additional DCP, South District, Delhi, confirmed strong security arrangements along the procession routes. Dinesh Kumar Gupta, Additional CP (Traffic) of Eastern Range, mentioned that traffic staff and local police were deployed, and traffic would be diverted as needed.
In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, twelve companies of the Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed. Joint CP (Law and Order) Kirit Rathod said drones and social media monitoring were used to prevent rumors.
A rare traditional Muharram procession was held at Dal Lake in Srinagar, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. In Mumbai’s Dongri area, people attended a Muharram Tazia procession.
Earlier this year, the All India Shia Personal Law Board requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure adequate security for Muharram processions to maintain law and order.
