New York [US], September 25: Chief Advisor to the Bangladesh interim government, Muhammad Yunus, met US President Joe Biden on Tuesday during the 79th United Nations General Assembly. President Biden congratulated Yunus on his recent appointment and affirmed the close partnership between the United States and Bangladesh, rooted in shared democratic values and strong people-to-people ties.

President Biden welcomed further engagement between the two governments and offered continued US support as Bangladesh implements its new reform agenda. Yunus also apprised Biden on the situation in Bangladesh, highlighting the students’ uprising against the previous government and the need for US cooperation in rebuilding the country. Yunus presented Biden with a copy of ‘The Art of Triumph,’ a book depicting wall paintings by students during the uprising.

This meeting marked the first time a US President has met a head of the Bangladesh government on the sidelines of the UNGA. Additionally, Yunus met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, discussing ways to strengthen Bangladesh-Canada relations, deepen freedom, build institutions, and support Bangladeshi youth. Trudeau expressed Canada’s readiness to support institution building in Bangladesh and received a copy of ‘The Art of Triumph’ from Yunus.

Notably, Bangladesh experienced significant turmoil with the ouster of Sheikh Hasina amid student protests, leading to the establishment of an interim government. Yunus faced protests in New York, with demonstrators chanting slogans against him over alleged attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.
