Muhammad Yunus Meets Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and World Bank President Ajay Banga at UN Headquarters
New York [US], September 26: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the UN headquarters on Wednesday. They discussed ways to strengthen their countries’ relationship, invest in solar panels, and expand business cooperation.
Yunus shared this news in a post on X, saying, “Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the UN headquarters on Wednesday, to discuss bilateral issues, with a focus on strengthening relations, solar panel investments, and expanding business cooperation.”
On the same day, Yunus also met with World Bank President Ajay Banga. The World Bank has agreed to provide USD 3.5 billion to Bangladesh this fiscal year to support financial sector reforms. Yunus mentioned this in another post on X, stating, “World Bank President Ajay Banga met with Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during a UN sideline meeting in New York on Wednesday. The World Bank will provide USD 3.5 billion to Bangladesh this fiscal year to support reforms in the financial sector.”
Earlier, on Tuesday, Yunus called for the repatriation of Rohingyas during a high-level meeting at the UN. He highlighted the challenges Bangladesh faces due to hosting over 1.2 million displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar. Yunus emphasized that while Bangladesh has shown empathy, the social, economic, and environmental costs are significant, and repatriation is the only sustainable solution.
Following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister on August 5 amid student-led protests, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took charge of the interim government. The protests were against a quota system for government jobs. After Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country, President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament to form an interim administration. Yunus was sworn in on August 8 as the head of the interim government.
This visit marks Muhammad Yunus’s first trip to the United States as the head of the interim government. According to the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yunus has several high-profile meetings scheduled on the sidelines of the UNGA. He is set to address the general debate of the UNGA on September 27.
