Muhammad Yunus Becomes Head of Bangladesh’s Interim Government Amid Unrest
Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus has been sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, following the resignation and fleeing of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina due to massive unrest. Yunus, 84, took the oath at a ceremony in Dhaka, administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
The country has been experiencing violence and protests, primarily led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs. These protests have escalated into anti-government demonstrations.
Yunus, a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur and founder of Grameen Bank, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his efforts in economic and social development through microcredit. Upon his arrival in Bangladesh, Yunus appealed to his supporters to maintain calm and avoid violence, stressing the importance of saving the country from chaos.
The ceremony was attended by foreign diplomats, civil society members, top businessmen, and members of the former opposition party, but no representatives from Sheikh Hasina’s party, Awami League, were present.
Bangladesh is currently facing a volatile political situation, with reports of violence, killings, and arson targeting Awami League offices, members, and minority communities.
