Muhammad Yunus Appointed Head of Bangladesh’s Interim Government

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, according to an announcement by President Shahabuddin’s Press Secretary, Joynal Abedin. The decision was made during a meeting between President Shahabuddin and the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The remaining members of the interim government will be finalized after talks with various political parties. Earlier, a 13-member team from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement traveled to Bangabhaban to discuss the current situation and the outline of the interim government.

Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, amid mounting student-led protests. The protests, initially focused on ending the quota system for government jobs, evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations.

A day after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, President Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the country’s parliament to pave the way for an interim administration. This decision was made after a meeting with the heads of the three armed forces, political leaders, civil society representatives, and student movement leaders.

Additionally, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been released from jail, and the process of releasing those detained during the student protests has begun, with many already freed. The president’s press team stated that the decision to free Khaleda Zia and the detained protesters was made unanimously.
