On August 17, Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the Bangladesh government, participated in the third Voice of Global South Summit. He spoke about geopolitical challenges, climate change, and the situation in Bangladesh. The summit was hosted by India and held virtually.

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed a press conference after the summit. He mentioned that many leaders, including Yunus, discussed their national circumstances and global issues. Jaishankar noted that Yunus began by greeting the Indian Prime Minister on India’s Independence Day and then talked about various concerns, including climate change and Bangladesh’s situation.

Jaishankar refrained from commenting on Yunus’s remarks in detail, stating that it would be more appropriate for Yunus to elaborate on his own statements.

Bangladesh has recently experienced violent protests, leading to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s apparent resignation and departure from the country. There have been attacks on minorities, and authorities have assured their protection.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation with Prof Muhammad Yunus, reaffirming India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh. Modi emphasized the importance of protecting Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh. Yunus assured that the Interim Government would prioritize the safety and security of all minority groups.

The two leaders also discussed ways to strengthen the bilateral relationship in line with their national priorities.

The Global South Summit initiative is part of PM Modi’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas aur Sabka Prayas’ and is based on India’s philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. It aims to bring together countries of the Global South to share their perspectives and priorities on various issues. India hosted the first Voice of Global South Summit on January 12-13, 2023, and the second on November 17, both virtually.
