On October 19, in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, Mubarak Gul, a leader from the National Conference, was sworn in as the Protem Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly. The oath was administered by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at the Raj Bhawan. Gul, who won the assembly election from the Eidgah constituency, announced that the oath ceremony for the newly elected MLAs would take place on Monday, October 21.

Historic Elections in Jammu and Kashmir

The recent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir marked a significant event, being the first since the abrogation of Article 370. The NC-Congress alliance emerged victorious, with the National Conference winning 42 seats and Congress securing six. The BJP also performed well, winning 29 seats, while other parties like the People’s Democratic Party, People’s Conference, CPI-M, and AAP won a few seats each. Seven seats were claimed by Independents.

Protem Speaker Mubarak Gul emphasized the importance of integrating new MLAs with experienced ones to ensure smooth proceedings. He also mentioned the ongoing discussions about the restoration of statehood, stating that it is a priority for the people and the government. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary highlighted issues like unemployment and the need for the central government to fulfill its promises, including restoring statehood.

Omar Abdullah’s Leadership

Omar Abdullah, the first Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, chaired his initial cabinet meeting at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar. The meeting focused on addressing key issues and fulfilling the expectations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
