Mubarak Gul Appointed as Pro-tem Speaker in Jammu and Kashmir

On October 18, Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha appointed Mubarak Gul, a senior leader from the National Conference, as the pro-tem speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Mubarak Gul, who won the assembly election from the Eidgah constituency, will oversee the oath-taking ceremony for the assembly members on October 21, 2024, in Srinagar.

Assembly Elections and Results

The recent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir marked the first since the abrogation of Article 370. The elections were held in three phases, and the results were announced on October 8. The National Conference-Congress alliance emerged victorious, with the National Conference winning 42 seats and Congress securing six. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also performed well, winning 29 seats. Other parties like the People’s Democratic Party, People’s Conference, CPI-M, and AAP, along with Independents, won the remaining seats.

Omar Abdullah’s Return as Chief Minister

Omar Abdullah, who previously served as Chief Minister from 2009 to 2014, has returned to the position. He chaired his first cabinet meeting at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar after taking the oath as the Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
