MS Dhoni’s Future in IPL 2025 Uncertain

Chennai Super Kings Await Decision

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star MS Dhoni has not yet confirmed if he will play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, according to CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan. After CSK’s unexpected exit in the group stage of IPL 2024, Dhoni has remained silent about his plans for the next season. With the IPL 2025 mega auction approaching, Viswanathan hopes Dhoni will decide by October 31.

Retention Rules and Dhoni’s Potential Return

October 31 is the deadline for all ten IPL teams to submit their list of retained players. CSK can retain Dhoni as an uncapped player due to a rule change allowing players retired from international cricket for five years to be considered uncapped. If Dhoni agrees, CSK can retain him for Rs 4 crore from their Rs 120 crore budget. Each team can retain up to six players before the auction.

Dhoni’s Recent Performance

Dhoni last played for India in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. Since retiring in 2020, he has only played in the IPL. In the 2024 season, he scored 161 runs with a strike rate of 220, serving as a finisher for CSK, who have won the championship five times.
