Mohammed Shami’s Return to Cricket: Decision Pending on Australia Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah announced that a decision on Mohammed Shami’s participation in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be made after receiving a report from the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami is making significant progress in his recovery from an ankle injury that has kept him out of cricket since the ODI World Cup last November. He is expected to be ready for India’s home season, starting with a Test series against Bangladesh in September.

Shami is currently in the final stages of his rehabilitation at the NCA in Bengaluru. He resumed bowling last month and has been gradually increasing his workload without reporting any pain.

Jay Shah stated, “Shami playing the Australia series or not is a matter of his fitness and a decision will be taken after the NCA report.”

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed Shami’s progress and indicated that the first Test against Bangladesh starting on September 19 in Chennai is the goal for his comeback. Agarkar said, “Shami has started to bowl which is a good sign. September 19 is the first Test and that was always the goal.”

Shami has an impressive Test record in Australia, with 31 wickets in eight matches at an average of 32.16, including two five-wicket hauls.

Additionally, Jay Shah confirmed that former India middle-order batting great VVS Laxman will continue as the head of NCA. Laxman, who took the role in December 2021, will remain until his contract expires in September this year.
