Top Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been named in the Bengal squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Shami made a remarkable return to competitive cricket after a year-long injury, taking seven wickets in Bengal's 11-run victory over Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy. His performance has sparked hopes of his inclusion in India's squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, though his participation remains uncertain.
Shami's return to domestic cricket is a significant step in his comeback. He was in exceptional form during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, emerging as the leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets in seven matches, including three five-wicket hauls. His standout performance was against New Zealand in the semi-final, where he took 7/57. Despite India's loss to Australia in the final, the team later won the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, although Shami was sidelined due to injury.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly suggested that Shami should skip the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and head to Australia to prepare for the series. Ganguly emphasized that even if Shami doesn't play in the Perth Test, he should practice in the nets to get ready for the rest of the series.
In addition to Shami, his younger brother Mohammed Kaif has also been included in the Bengal squad. Bengal is placed in Group A of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, alongside teams like Hyderabad, Meghalaya, and Madhya Pradesh. The tournament starts on November 23 and concludes on December 15.
