In Mohali, Punjab, India, police have arrested 21 people, including 17 men and 4 women, for allegedly scamming American nationals. The arrests were made during simultaneous searches at their flats, where police seized 20 laptops and Rs 1,40,000 in cash.

Details of the Arrest

According to Mohali Superintendent of Police (SP) Jyoti Yadav, the group was running an illegal cyber center. They would call American nationals, posing as police and customs officials, and claim that a parcel containing drugs had been seized at the Mexican border. The victims were then tricked into sharing their personal information through a URL, which allowed the scammers to hack their bank accounts and steal money.

Who Were the Scammers?

Out of the 21 arrested, four are African nationals, and the rest are from various Indian states including West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Bihar. The group is mostly young, well-educated, and includes IT graduates.

Current Status

All 21 individuals have been remanded to police custody for three days. The police continue to investigate the case to uncover more details about the scam.
