Mitchell Starc’s Expensive Over and Australia’s Big Loss Against England
On September 28, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc set an unwanted record by delivering the most expensive over in One Day Internationals (ODIs) by an Australian bowler. This happened during the fourth ODI against England at Lord’s.
Starc’s Expensive Over
In the final over of the rain-shortened 39-over match, Starc was hit for 28 runs by England’s all-rounder Liam Livingstone. The over included four sixes and a four, ruining Starc’s bowling figures. He ended up conceding 70 runs in his eight overs without taking any wickets, with an economy rate of 8.75 runs per over.

Before Starc, the record for the most expensive over by an Australian in ODIs was held by Xavier Doherty, Adam Zampa, and Cameron Green, each conceding 26 runs in an over. Australia had a tough day, losing the match by 186 runs while chasing a target of 313. They were bowled out for just 126 runs in 24.4 overs, marking their fourth-biggest loss in ODIs by runs. This was also the second-lowest ODI total at Lord’s for Australia, after their 107 all-out against South Africa in 2003.
England’s Performance
England’s innings was highlighted by a 48-run opening stand between Phil Salt and Ben Duckett. Skipper Harry Brook scored 87 runs, and Liam Livingstone added an unbeaten 62 runs, helping England reach 312/5 in their 39 overs. Adam Zampa was the pick of the Australian bowlers with 2/66.

In response, Australia started well with a 68-run opening partnership between Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh. However, after their partnership was broken, the team collapsed, thanks to excellent bowling from Matthew Potts and Brydon Carse.
