MIT and Hong Kong Polytechnic Study Reveals Air Pollution Exposure in the Bronx
A new study by researchers from MIT and Hong Kong Polytechnic University shows that people’s daily movements significantly impact their exposure to air pollution. The study used mobile data and environmental sensors mounted on New York City vehicles to gather detailed information.
Key Findings
The research found that exposure to particulate matter 2.5 microns or larger increases by about 2.4% when daily travel patterns are considered. The southeastern part of the Bronx, where expressways and industries are concentrated, has the highest levels of particulate matter.
Disparities in Exposure
The study also revealed significant disparities in pollution exposure based on demographics. Hispanic communities, in particular, face higher levels of exposure, although there are variations within these communities.
Health Implications
The Bronx has the worst air quality among New York City boroughs, leading to asthma rates 2.5 times higher than in other boroughs. The study’s findings highlight the health consequences of pollution exposure.
Future Applications
Researchers believe that their methods can be used for future studies on pollution exposure. They suggest that cities can use their existing vehicle fleets as environmental sensors to improve air quality monitoring.
Paolo Santi from MIT’s Senseable City Lab and An Wang from Hong Kong Polytechnic University were among the study’s co-authors. The paper will be published in Nature Cities.
