Mirabai Chanu and Shanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma Honored by Manipur Police

Imphal (Manipur), August 22: Rajiv Singh, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Manipur, along with other senior police officials, honored athletes Mirabai Chanu and Shanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma at the Police Headquarters in Imphal. Both athletes participated in the recently concluded Paris Olympics.

India’s Performance at the Paris Olympics

India concluded its campaign at the Paris Olympics with a total of six medals: five bronze and one silver. Mirabai Chanu, who hails from Manipur, narrowly missed a podium finish, securing fourth place in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event with a combined total of 199kg.

Shanglakpam Nilakanta Sharma, also from Manipur, was named as an alternate player in India’s men’s hockey team. The team, led by Harmanpreet Singh, won back-to-back bronze medals for the first time in 52 years, defeating Spain 2-1.

Other Indian Achievements

In shooting, Manu Bhaker made history by becoming the first Indian athlete in the post-independence era to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics. She won a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event and another bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol event alongside Sarabjot Singh. Manu narrowly missed a third medal, finishing fourth in the women’s 25m pistol shooting event.

Swapnil Kusale added to India’s medal tally with a bronze in the men’s 50m rifle 3P event. Neeraj Chopra, India’s javelin ace, won a silver medal with a throw of 89.45m, while wrestler Aman Sehrawat secured a bronze medal in his Olympic debut with a 13-5 victory over Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz.
