Miftah Ismail and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Launch New Party ‘Awaam Pakistan’ in Islamabad

On July 7, former Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders Miftah Ismail and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi introduced their new political party, Awaam Pakistan, in Islamabad. The launch event marked their effort to create a new political path, promising a fresh approach to governance in Pakistan.

Vision and Goals

The party’s slogan, ‘Awaam Pakistan: Badlein ge nizam’ (People of Pakistan: We will change the system), was highlighted in a video released weeks before the launch. At the event, Ismail spoke about Pakistan’s challenges, including educational deficiencies and economic inequalities. He emphasized the party’s commitment to meritocracy, term limits for leadership, and a stance against dynastic politics.

Ismail stated, “If you believe that we have the right to move forward […] then join us, we will stand with you and rebuild Pakistan.” He also noted that no senior party member would serve more than two terms, and their children would not inherit their positions.

Abbasi’s Remarks

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi echoed Ismail’s sentiments, criticizing the current political elite for prioritizing personal gain over public service. He described Awaam Pakistan as a grassroots-driven movement focused on constitutional integrity and parliamentary democracy. Abbasi emphasized that the party would not compromise on principles and would seek members based on ability and ethical track record.

Abbasi stated, “We are presenting an idea, not merely forming another political faction.” He dismissed traditional political ideologies, focusing instead on uplifting Pakistanis and ensuring national progress.

Criticism and Future Plans

Despite the enthusiasm, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar questioned the credibility of Awaam Pakistan’s founders, calling their promises recycled rhetoric. However, Awaam Pakistan plans to release a comprehensive mission statement outlining concrete policy initiatives soon.

Abbasi assured, “We are not here to make empty promises; our statement will present viable solutions to Pakistan’s most pressing issues.”
