Middle Eastern Leaders Meet in Jeddah to Discuss Peace Amid Iran-Israel Tensions

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, August 9: Leaders from Middle Eastern countries gathered at an emergency summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah to address the rising tensions between Iran and Israel. The meeting was called in response to the assassination of Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, which Iran blames on Israel.

Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri, attended the summit, where discussions focused on finding a peaceful resolution. Jordan’s Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, emphasized that ending Israeli aggression on Gaza is crucial to stopping the escalation. The United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, stated that ceasefire negotiations are in their final stage and warned that any regional tensions could jeopardize peace talks.

France’s President, Emanuel Macron, also urged Iran to abandon retaliation against Israel. Iran’s new President, Masoud Pezeshkian, responded by calling for an end to arms sales and support for Israel by Western countries.

Hamas has complicated peace efforts by appointing Yahya Sinwar, linked to recent attacks, as Haniyeh’s replacement. The OIC resolution’s effectiveness hinges on US President Joe Biden’s involvement, as he could influence Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Palestine’s Permanent Observer at the UN, Riyad Mansour, stressed the need for a ceasefire and addressing legitimate rights. Concerns remain that Hezbollah might strike Israel, potentially leading to a broader regional conflict.
