Mehbooba Mufti Urges Indian Government to Build Power Projects in Jammu and Kashmir
Mehbooba Mufti, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the Indian government to construct two power projects in the Union Territory. She believes this would address the region’s power issues more effectively than questioning the Indus Water Treaty.
Mufti’s comments come in response to a statement by Omar Abdullah, another former Chief Minister, who claimed that the Indus Water Treaty limits Jammu and Kashmir’s ability to utilize its hydropower potential. The treaty, signed in 1960 by India and Pakistan with the World Bank as a signatory, outlines cooperation and information exchange on the use of cross-border rivers in the region.
Mufti criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for promoting a narrative to review the treaty, arguing that the focus should be on ensuring that the power projects already built are beneficial to Jammu and Kashmir. She also called for compensation from the Indian government for the losses suffered by the region over the years.
Highlighting the ongoing conflict in the area, Mufti mentioned the recent death of Abida, who succumbed to injuries from a grenade attack. She emphasized the need for a resolution between the Indian and Jammu and Kashmir governments to prevent further loss and suffering.
