Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma Inaugurates Oyster Mushroom Cluster in North Garo Hills
On Tuesday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the ‘Oyster Mushroom Cluster’ at Mendipathar in North Garo Hills. The project, costing Rs 10 crore, aims to encourage mushroom cultivation and will benefit close to 1000 farmers in its first phase.
The project is implemented by the Mendipathar Multipurpose Cooperative Society, led by Sister Rose, and funded by the SFRUTI scheme from MSME, with additional funding of Rs 3 crore from the state government. CM Sangma highlighted the increasing global demand for mushrooms and assured government support and training for interested farmers.
During the event, Sangma also flagged off pickup vehicles and barrels for rubber collection, noting the region’s large-scale rubber production. A rubber Cinx Unit was allocated to the Mendipathar Multipurpose Cooperative Society to support value addition and increase farmers’ incomes.
Earlier, CM Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the international border situation amid political unrest in Bangladesh. Sangma stated that Meghalaya police are on high alert, with a night curfew imposed along the border to enhance security. The Home Minister assured that measures are in place to prevent border crossings and secure the area.
