Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma Helps Evacuate 40 Medical Students from Bangladesh
Amid escalating unrest in Bangladesh, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that 40 medical students from Meghalaya were evacuated from Dhaka on Saturday. The students will enter India via Agartala and continue their journey to Shillong.
CM Sangma assured that all necessary arrangements for the safe evacuation of the students have been made. The state government is in constant contact with the Indian Embassy in Bangladesh to facilitate the process. Buses and other logistics have been arranged in Agartala to bring the students home safely.
As of Friday evening, 405 Indian students have been safely evacuated from Bangladesh. The evacuation was conducted through the Dawki Integrated Check Post, and included students from Nepal and Bhutan, as well as a few tourists.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) advised Indian nationals in Bangladesh to follow the High Commission’s advisory, which recommends avoiding local travel amid violent protests. The MEA assured that the High Commission and Assistant High Commissions are available on helpline numbers for any assistance required.
Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, expressed hope that the Bangladesh government would resolve the situation soon. He emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns of students and expressed confidence in Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ability to restore normalcy.
The protests in Bangladesh are driven by demands for reform in the country’s quota system for civil service jobs. In response, Bangladesh has imposed a curfew and disabled mobile internet services to curb disinformation.
