Meeting on Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 Held in New Delhi
A meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 was held at the Parliament Library Building in New Delhi on Thursday. The committee listened to the views and suggestions of various experts and stakeholders, including Prof Faizan Mustafa, Vice Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University, Patna; Pasmanda Muslim Mahaaz; and the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
The committee will hold another meeting on September 20 to hear suggestions from the All India Sajjadanashin Council, Ajmer; Muslim Rashtriya Manch, Delhi; and Bharat First, Delhi. A previous meeting scheduled for September 18 was postponed at the request of some members.
The fourth meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee to examine the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, was held on September 6. During this meeting, senior officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) made a presentation, and several stakeholders, including the Zakat Foundation of India and the Telangana Waqf Board, shared their views and suggestions.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stated that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which addresses the management, preservation, and misuse of Waqf properties, will be passed in Parliament soon. The bill proposes several changes, including allowing a non-Muslim chief executive officer and at least two non-Muslim members to be appointed to state Waqf boards. It also proposes making the District Collector the arbiter of whether a property is Waqf property or government land.
