Meeran Haider Withdraws Bail Appeal in Delhi Riots Case
New Delhi [India], September 6: Meeran Haider, accused in the Delhi riots larger conspiracy case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, withdrew his bail appeal from the Delhi High Court to approach the trial court. The Division Bench of Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Girish Kathpaliya allowed the withdrawal and dismissed the appeal as withdrawn.
Haider’s plea was previously dismissed by the trial court in 2022, and his appeal was pending before the High Court. On May 20, 2022, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to Delhi Police regarding Haider’s bail plea. The Karkardooma Court had dismissed his bail plea, rejecting the defence counsel’s argument that Haider was not present in Delhi during the riots.
The court noted that in a conspiracy case, it is not necessary for every accused to be present at the scene. The court also considered statements from protected witnesses, which highlighted Haider’s role in the conspiracy and riots. The defence argued that even if all allegations were accepted, the prosecution failed to disclose any crime committed by Haider under UAPA.
According to the prosecution, Haider was a member of the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) and several WhatsApp groups. He managed eight protest sites and was involved in collecting money for the riots.
