New Delhi [India], August 11: Mazagaon Dockyards Limited (MDL) has successfully cleared crucial trials in the Rs 60,000 crore project to build six advanced conventional submarines for the Indian Navy. The trials focused on Air Independent Propulsion systems, which allow submarines to stay underwater for at least two weeks without needing to resurface to charge batteries.

Mumbai-headquartered MDL and Larsen and Toubro are the main contenders in the project, with German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Spanish Navantia as their respective partners. A Commodore-rank officer from the Indian Navy informed MDL that they have qualified for the trial requirements. Meanwhile, Larsen and Toubro were informed about deviations in their trials held in Cartagena, Spain, in June.

The submarine programme is currently in its middle stages and requires further approvals from the Defence Ministry and the top levels of the government. The Indian Navy’s long-term plan includes 18 conventional and 6 nuclear attack submarines. Project 75 India aims to build six conventional submarines in an Indian shipyard, while the next-gen Project 76 will focus on complete Indian design and construction.

The P-75 India project has been in development for several years, and its stringent requirements have limited international participation.
