Mayawati Praises Supreme Court’s Ruling on UP Madrasa Education Act

In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati expressed her approval of the Supreme Court’s recent decisions. The court upheld the constitutionality of the UP Madrasa Education Board Act-2004 and limited government control over private property. Mayawati highlighted the importance of the court’s decision, which she believes will resolve disputes and bring stability to madrasa education in Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati emphasized that the Supreme Court’s ruling aligns with constitutional values and protects the educational rights of religious minorities. She also welcomed the court’s decision that not all private properties should be considered community assets, thus preventing their acquisition by the government.

The Supreme Court’s decision overturned a previous ruling by the Allahabad High Court, which had declared the Madrasa Act unconstitutional. The court clarified that while the Act regulates educational standards, it does not interfere with the daily operations of madrasas. The ruling aims to protect minority rights and ensure students can graduate and find employment.

During the hearings, the Supreme Court described India as a “melting pot of cultures, civilizations, and religions,” highlighting the importance of preserving diversity. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had argued that madrasa education was not comprehensive, but the Uttar Pradesh government supported the legislation and accepted the ruling.
