Mayawati Praises Delhi University for Rejecting Manusmriti in Law Syllabus
Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, welcomed the decision of Delhi University to reject a proposal to include ‘Manusmriti’ in the syllabus of its Law Faculty. She stated that strong opposition to the proposal was natural and that the decision to cancel it was a welcome step.
Mayawati explained that the Manusmriti does not match the principles on which Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar composed the Indian Constitution. She emphasized that the Constitution was created with the self-respect of neglected people and women, as well as humanism and secularism, at its core.
On Thursday, Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh announced that the proposal to include the Sanskrit text ‘Manusmriti’ in the LLB curriculum was rejected. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also confirmed the rejection, stating that the government is committed to upholding the true spirit and letter of the Constitution.
