Islamabad [Pakistan], September 21: Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), has expressed strong opposition to the proposed constitutional amendments by the Pakistani government. During a press conference in Multan, he pledged to prevent any decisions or legislation in parliament that would compromise human rights or undermine the judicial system.

Rehman stressed the importance of involving parliament in the process of protecting fundamental rights. He voiced concerns over the formation of a constitutional court, suspecting it could be used with ‘mala fide intentions’ to target opponents. He stated, “We agree with the idea of a constitutional court, but we suspect mala fide intention. The judicial structure is being formed in a way that could target opponents.”

Rehman criticized the current Pakistani government, claiming it has weakened the country and neglected the issues of the common man. He argued that the current assemblies do not truly represent the people, as lawmakers are not elected by the public but by other forces. He reiterated the JUI-F’s demand for fresh elections in Pakistan.

Earlier, on September 18, Rehman rejected the draft of the constitutional amendments, calling it ‘unacceptable and unviable.’ He mentioned that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party had thoroughly reviewed the proposed amendments and found them lacking. Rehman also criticized the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) government for sharing the draft with only a few individuals, stating that the shared document was not a proper draft.
