Massive Landslides in Wayanad: Rescue Efforts and Government Responses

Two massive landslides hit Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad, Kerala, on July 30, claiming over 300 lives and injuring many others. BJP leader and former Union Minister V Muraleedharan stated that there were alerts warning the state of the climate situation and emphasized the need for precautionary measures.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that early warnings were given to Kerala seven days before the incident, and NDRF teams were sent on July 23. However, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan refuted these claims, stating that only an orange alert was issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) before the landslides.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, and civil administration working together. The Indian Army has found four people alive in the rubble, and specialized teams with dog squads and heavy equipment are conducting thorough search operations. The Indian Air Force is also involved, using drone systems for sub-soil evacuation monitoring.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George reported that post-mortem procedures for 199 bodies have been conducted, and DNA samples of 130 body parts were taken. Hospitals in Wayanad and nearby areas are on standby to provide intensive care to those rescued.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi visited the affected areas and relief camps, showing their support. The rescue and relief operations continue to ensure the quick evacuation of stranded people and provision of basic amenities and medical assistance.
