Mass Burial in Wayanad After Deadly Landslides: Over 300 Lives Lost
In Wayanad, Kerala, a mass burial is underway for the unidentified victims of a devastating landslide. The district administration is overseeing the process, with several ambulances arriving to transport the bodies. A large crowd has gathered at the burial site.
The landslides, which occurred on July 30 in Chooralmala and Mundakkai, have claimed over 300 lives. As of now, 220 bodies and 160 body parts have been recovered, while 180 people are still missing. Kerala Minister K Rajan provided these updates during a press conference on Sunday.
Minister Rajan mentioned that 34 bodies remain unidentified, and 171 bodies have been released to their relatives. He also noted that 1382 members from various forces and about 1800 volunteers are part of the ongoing rescue operations.
Union Minister George Kurien informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the relief and rescue efforts. PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. The Kerala Chief Minister’s Office has instituted night patrolling in the affected areas to prevent trespassing.
