Mark Ramprakash Backs Andy Flower for England’s White-Ball Coach Role

Former England cricketer and current Middlesex batting coach Mark Ramprakash has expressed his support for Andy Flower to become England’s white-ball coach. Flower has previously coached England from 2009 to 2014 and has had successful coaching stints with various T20 franchises.

Ramprakash praised Flower, saying, “In my view, the coach who merits the position is Andy Flower. He’s a deep thinker about the game and I have huge admiration for him.” He added that Flower has shown flexibility and adaptability in different environments, citing his success with Trent Rockets in The Hundred and his experience in the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Despite Ramprakash’s support, he acknowledged that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Rob Key might consider other options based on the future of England’s captain, Jos Buttler. Ramprakash noted, “The relationship between captain and coach is massive – if it doesn’t work, the team is not going to do well. But there’s no guarantee that Buttler is going to be captain after the Champions Trophy next February.”

Ramprakash concluded that if Key wants to build for the future, Flower is the most qualified candidate, but if a short-term view is taken, someone like Kumar Sangakkara might be considered.
