Marigold Farmers in Udhampur Reap Profits During Diwali
In Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, farmers are experiencing a profitable season with the cultivation of marigold flowers, especially during the Diwali festival. Anita Sharma, who has been cultivating marigolds for 12 years, shared her joy over the high demand and profits during this festive period. She works with a team of four to five people to collect the flowers.
Geeta Devi, another farmer, mentioned that they often travel long distances to deliver flowers and utilize their free time for cultivation. Champal, a supervisor in the district, highlighted that 25 workers across three districts receive subsidies and plant medicines. He noted that the price of marigolds rises from Rs 50 to Rs 100 per kg during Diwali, boosting profits.
Deepak Sharma, a pioneering farmer from Thial, started marigold cultivation in the state over a decade ago. He observed significant improvements in cultivation and increased participation, with around 10 to 11 women now involved. The government supports these efforts with schemes, subsidies, and assistance in selling the flowers.
