Union Cabinet’s Approval

The Union Cabinet has granted classical language status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali. Deputy CM Fadnavis, in a video message, thanked PM Modi and the Union Cabinet for recognizing Marathi as a classical language.

Efforts by Maharashtra Government

Fadnavis recalled his efforts during his tenure as Chief Minister and acknowledged the current Maharashtra government’s significant contributions under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He emphasized the importance of this recognition for the Marathi-speaking community.

Criteria for Classical Language Status

The Government of India introduced the classical language category in 2004, with Tamil being the first to receive the status. The criteria include high antiquity, a body of ancient literature, and an original literary tradition. A Linguistic Experts Committee was established to evaluate languages for this status.
