Manu Bhaker to Lead India at Paris Olympics 2024 Closing Ceremony
Paris, France, August 5, 2024: India’s two-time Olympic medalist and star shooter, Manu Bhaker, will be the flag bearer for the country at the closing ceremony of the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed this on Monday.
IOA President Dr. PT Usha and Chef de Mission Gagan Narang announced, “Pistol shooter Manu Bhaker will be a flag bearer at the closing ceremony. The choice of the male flag bearer will be made at a later stage.”
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) shared a video of Bhaker reacting to the news, captioned, “UNBRIDLED JOY! @realmanubhaker finds out she has been chosen to be a flag-bearer at the closing ceremony of the #Paris2024Olympics. #Cheer4Bharat.”
Bhaker excelled in Paris, winning two bronze medals. This was a redemption for the 22-year-old after her gun malfunctioned during the 10m air pistol qualification round in the Tokyo Olympics 2021, causing her to miss the top-eight finish and ending in 12th place.
In Paris, Bhaker opened India’s medal tally by securing third place in the women’s individual 10m Air pistol event, becoming the first-ever woman shooter to win an Olympic medal for India. She, along with Sarabjot Singh, also won the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol (mixed team) event, marking India’s first-ever shooting team medal.
Bhaker narrowly missed a third medal, finishing fourth in the women’s 25m pistol shooting event. She is the first athlete from the Indian contingent after independence to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics. She joins an elite group of Indian athletes with multiple individual Olympic medals, including PV Sindhu and Sushil Kumar.
