Manjoor Ahmed Starts Annual Fish Stocking at Ranjit Sagar Dam in Kathua

On Saturday, Manjoor Ahmed, Joint Director of Fisheries, began the annual stocking of fish seeds at the Ranjit Sagar Dam Reservoir in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir. This event took place at the Reservoir Fisheries Development Project (RFDP) Satwain.

Fish Varieties Stocked

Fish seeds of various types, including Indian major carp and exotic carp like Rohu, Mrigal, Catla, Common Carp, and Silver Carp, were introduced into the reservoir.

Significant Fish Production

Manjoor Ahmed highlighted that the Department of Fisheries’ efforts have led to a total fish production of 26900 tonnes in the Union Territory (UT), which includes 1990 tonnes of trout. He mentioned that about 150 lakhs of trout seed and 630 lakhs of carp fish seed have been produced. Out of this, 8.40 lakhs of trout and 51.30 lakhs of carp seed have been stocked in various water bodies as part of fish conservation measures.

National Fish Seed Farm

The National Fish Seed Farm in Kathua, established by the Department for Carp Seed Production, meets local fish seed demands and enhances fish production in the region.

Economic and Scientific Importance

The Ranjit Sagar reservoir has generated significant revenue through the auctioning of fishing rights. This development has improved the socio-economic conditions of the locals. To further utilize the reservoir sustainably, the Department has requested ICAR-CIFRI to conduct a scientific study to assess its yield and potential.
