Manipur Closes Colleges and Imposes Internet Ban Amid Violence in Kakching

The higher and technical education department of Manipur announced that all government, aided, and private colleges will remain closed until September 12. This decision was communicated in an official order signed by Laishram Dolie Devi, Joint Secretary (Hr. and Tech. Edn.).

Earlier today, joint security forces conducted a flag march in violence-hit Kakching’s Sugnu and surrounding areas. The state government has also imposed a ban on internet services starting Tuesday to prevent the spread of disinformation and false rumors through social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The internet ban will continue until September 15.

Inspector General of Police for Operations, IK Muviah, stated that evidence collected during the investigation of a drone bombing case would likely be handed over to national investigative agencies for higher-level investigation. Bomb fragments have been sent to a forensic lab for chemical analysis.

In a series of successful joint operations, the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and other security forces conducted search and recovery efforts across various districts of Manipur in the first week of September 2024. These operations led to the recovery of substantial quantities of arms, ammunition, and warlike stores, highlighting the effectiveness of the joint efforts.

Acting on specific intelligence, joint search and area sanitization operations were launched in areas such as Liklai, Mashemjang, P Geljang, Thoroilok, Gelmon, Molphai Tampak, Leisanbung, and Maulnghat in Churachandpur District by the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF, and Manipur Police.
