Indian field hockey player Mandeep Singh shared a heartfelt message for retiring goalkeeper PR Sreejesh after India secured a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. With a 2-1 victory over Spain, thanks to goals from Harmanpreet Singh and Sreejesh’s impressive saves, India celebrated their second consecutive Olympic bronze.
Sreejesh, dubbed the ‘God of Indian Modern Hockey,’ ended his career on a high note, having saved 50 out of 62 shots during the tournament. The 36-year-old’s performance was crucial in helping India win at the Yves du Manoir Stadium.
Mandeep, who has played with Sreejesh for almost 13 years, expressed the team’s desire to win for him. ‘We wanted to play this match for Sreejesh as it was his last. He is retiring. We wanted to play for him. We have played with him for 12-13 years. We learnt a lot from him, he is a great goalkeeper. We had to win for him,’ Mandeep said.
Before the bronze medal game, Hockey India honored Sreejesh with the title ‘God of Indian Modern Hockey.’ The match saw India leading 2-1, with Spain attempting to equalize in the final seconds. The Indian team, playing in an electrifying atmosphere, added a fourth medal to their tally at the Paris Olympics after being down 0-1 in the first quarter.
