Man Arrested in Mumbai for Posing as PA of BJP MLA Ashish Shelar and Extorting Money

A man named Amin Irfan Bendrekar has been arrested by the Bandra Police in Mumbai for allegedly duping the relatives of jailed inmates. He posed as the personal assistant (PA) of BJP MLA Ashish Shelar and extorted money by promising aid from the state government.

How He Did It

Bendrekar contacted lawyers and obtained information about various clients by pretending to be the PA of the BJP MLA. He claimed that the Maharashtra State government was planning to release prisoners to decongest the jails. He imitated the voice of the PA and even the MLA himself, introducing himself as ‘Sharma’ to the lawyers and relatives of the inmates.

Multiple Cases Registered

The accused, a 24-year-old resident of Nala Sopara in the Palghar district, has multiple cases registered against him in various police stations in Mumbai. He convinced lawyers and families that the money would be refunded once the government approved the release of the prisoners. He also cited various reasons for the extortion, including medical expenses for prisoners.

Ongoing Investigation

Following a complaint, the Bandra police tracked down and arrested Bendrekar. The police are currently questioning him, and the investigation is still underway.
